EAT Stockholm Food Forum is much more than creating a better food system

During EAT Stockholm Food Forum fourth annual event, 500 of the brightest minds were brought together from science, politics, business, and civil society to exchange ideas for one goal. How can global leaders shift food systems towards sustainability, health, security, and equity within the boundaries of our planet?

This year, Sustainability Hub hosted a competence forum at EAT focusing on Co-Designing a Sustainable Future. A positive future scenario where sustainability, disruptive technological change, and Scandinavian values served as the framework for the workshop discussion. Delegates determined what actions individuals, business leaders, and society in general need to take to reach a sustainable future. Then through an interdisciplinary approach, delegates created synergies of the topics determining actions for a sustainable future.

The main outcomes from the S-HUB seminar are presented below.

Actions towards a sustainable future

  • Improvement and standardisation of monitoring and reporting
Monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions, water and land use done by individuals, businesses, and the government needs to be drastically improved. There should be a standard international framework that governments can make more informed policies. This data could also be used to determine how much all three levels need to be taxed for greenhouse gas emission.

  • Strong reward system for being sustainable
An example is making the better/more sustainable/healthy choice the most attractive choice for consumers. What’s good for the environment and health should be cheaper, more attractive.

  • Radical change of education
There’s a need for a radical rethink of education, which encompasses rethinking the entire education environments that we live in and how to redesign those. The values and objectives of education need to help create an equal society. More equality equals a happier society.

  • Transparent and understandable product information for the consumers
All consumer goods should be highly transparent. That way, consumers understand the carbon footprint they are leaving on the environment when consuming those goods.

How effective was the interdisciplinary approach used in the Sustainability Hub’s competence forum for co-designing a sustainable future, and what concrete actions did delegates propose for individuals, business leaders, and society to foster sustainability, while ensuring alignment with disruptive technological change and Scandinavian values?
